  • Streaming + Download

Includes high-quality download in MP3, FLAC and more. Paying supporters also get unlimited streaming via the free Bandcamp app.

Includes PDF version of the stories and notes about how to use them as a tool for literacy - though they stand alone as exciting fairy tales in their own right! Also available as an eBook if you prefer that format, see below. Also includes a sketch of "hieroglyphs" for each letter (PDF) - examples of how to present the other letters to the children (though Carey's more detailed colour versions are obviously examples of ideal ways to share the letters pictorially!)

Please note that everything is available for free - but donations/contributions will be very gratefully received! A lot of love and commitment has gone into creating these audio stories.

about

These full-length fairy tales stand in their own right, and were first told to a class of 6/7 year olds.
BUT they have an additional function of introducing the letters of the alphabet. The first story introduces a few key characters and, rather obliquely, the straight line and the curve, which are the building blocks of all the letters. The remaining stories all feature at least one new letter, introduced graphically as a character (or object) that both begins with the sound of the letter, and has the SHAPE of the letter. (For example, when the Beautiful Butterfly folds his wings, he makes the B shape). Hence children can be shown - ideally after the imagination has been stretched by the story - how letters are formed from such pictures. Two example pictures are shown here - for D, and for J and Q. Other sketches will be uploaded soon to show how the other characters form their letters; or use your own imagination. There are more notes in the attached PDF (and the eBook, available from Simric direct) about how to use this book as an introduction to literacy. Sample pictures coming soon.

All stories copyright Simric Yarrow 2013. Before these stories were ever written down, most of them were concocted and told to a class of children. So a big thank you to the children who were in class 1 in 2005 at Michael Oak Waldorf School – you were the inspiration for these stories: thank you Nawaal, Rachel, Isabella, Jesse, Azhar, Ben, Aziz, Lia, Halen, Chelsea, Amy, Jordan, Gabi, Jack, Andisiwe, Caitlin, Shanni, Sunya, James, Michael, Vikyle, Raylee, Jacques, Connor, Omri, Abraham, Hana, Alexander and Max.

A big thank you also to my colleagues at Michael Oak, including Marion Penfold who helped with suggestions for the introductory story, and Charlene Jefferies who first came up with J for Jellyfish; and my mentors at the Centre for Creative Education, including Peter van Alphen who encouraged us with the block on writing letter stories (from whence came Robin Redbreast). A few of the names are Waldorf classics that I first heard of then – even if I have enlarged quite a bit on their characters - such as the Kind King and Quiet Queen, Angel ‘A’ and the Crystal Cave.

Thank you to my marvellous wife, Carey Yarrow, for the 2 highly detailed letter pictures you can see here for your inspiration!

And last but by no means least - a huge thankyou to Roddy Bray of the wonderful GreatGuides.org, and Jay Simpson, who organised the recording date and the technical side of things.
